ISLAMABAD: Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar are all expected to be indicted today in corruption references filed against them by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in the accountability court.
These references were filed by NAB upon instructions of the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s Panama Paper’s case verdict that was announced on July 28.
Maryam Nawaz and Capt (retd) Safdar are already present in the country, but the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif is in London in the presence of his two sons Hussain and Hassan along with his wife Begum Kulsoom Nawaz who is getting treatment for Lymphoma.
Nawaz Sharif is being represented by his junior counsel Zafir Khan,Zafir was nominated by Nawaz Sharif’s legal team as the “pleader” and if the court were to level charges against Nawaz Sharif today, the points would be read out to Zafir Khan.
Senior federal ministers including Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb, Minister of State for Interior Affairs Tallal Chaudhary and other senior government and party representatives are also present on the occasion.
Security is tight and a large number of party supporters along with lawyers have not been allowed entry into the premises so as to avoid any situation like the one that developed the last time Maryam and Safdar appeared before court.
Court proceedings faced a 15 minute delay as Sharif family’s representative, Amjad Pervez pleaded that his clients should not be indicted until full documents regarding the case are provided to them.
According to details, NAB prosecutor opposed Amjad Pervez’s plea and the judge is expected to decide on this plea after court proceedings.
